How, you might ask? If you have goods in storage, that is money you are simply throwing away each and every month. Get them out of storage and have a garage sale - add all the things you have sitting around the house and you will not only find yourself with extra cash in hand - you will find it truly liberating to rid yourself of unnecessary personal possessions.
A garage/yard sale can be fun. But there are some pitfalls you should know:
· Don’t spend too much on your advertisement: your local paper will usually charge more for advertisements placed for a Saturday (that’s the best day!) – So just use the bare minimum. Trust me, seasoned buyers will gladly come to your sale even if you only put two lines in the paper.
· Don’t put a street number in the advertisement: second-hand dealers are out ‘hunting’ for bargains very early in the morning. If you put your street/apartment number in the ad you will have them there at 5.30am, or earlier!
· Make lots of signs: the more the better, it not only makes it easier for prospective buyers to find you, but you will have passers by stopping for a look too.
· Be realistic with your asking prices: Yes, they are your treasures, but do you want to sell them or put them back in storage? Be prepared to barter on price. I am not suggesting that you gift them, but the whole concept is to turn your goods into cash.
· It’s a garage sale: it’s about making money, but make it fun! Get a friend over to help, then order pizza at the end of the day and they will be duly rewarded, plus it takes some weight off your feet.
In France where I live the local councils allow residents to hold street 'car boot sales' regularly.
